Interns - Cocoa & Coffee Agroforestry

FarmTree is a start-up service provider specialising in supporting landscape restoration initiatives, in particular Agroforestry, with regards to technical advice, enterprise development, and impact quantification. FarmTree mission is to ‘make cost-benefit analysis accessible to smallholder farmers and their supporters’. The FarmTree flagship instrument is the FarmTree® Tool that forecasts economic, environmental and social impact of Agroforestry scenarios. FarmTree supports the realisation of Sustainable Development Goals such as no poverty, biodiversity, climate action, gender equality, and more.

FarmTree is developing advisory products, including

  • Agroforestry system capture
  • Agroforestry scenario performance projection
  • Land restoration project economic and financial analysis
  • Single-issue tools for financial or carbon balance planning

All tools are based on a combination of field data capture and IT development with the aim to unlock information to Agroforestry practitioners.

  • Literature review of cocoa and/or coffee agroforestry
  • Quantitatively document agroforestry species; including survey-sourced data
  • Be in close contact or visit cocoa farms, survey agroforestry activities to construct components of agroforestry business cases
  • Get acquainted with the FarmTree Tool and develop scalable methods to develop business cases
  • Take part in training to practitioners in hands-on cocoa agroforestry business planning
  • Assist with proposal development for follow-up activities

Must Have

  • BSc in agronomy, agroforestry, and / or agro-business development
  • Experience in agri-systems modelling or spreadsheet data processing
  • Knowledge of tropical agronomy
  • Interest in farm economics
  • English reading and writing skills, and working knowledge of Spanish and/or French


Nice to have

  • Experience in Agroforestry systems in Latin America, Africa or Asia
  • Spanish and / or French communication - oral and written
  • Additional modelling expertise; GIS, drone, climate change, app design, business development and/or other innovative expertise
  • Willingness for commitment to the company beyond the internship; if both parties are willing to extend collaboration

The Position

You will work as a member of FarmTree's advisory team. You are free to work part-time, at home or at distance, though regular interaction in Wageningen is preferred.

Results will be shared and discussed with the client, who will indicate further direction of research.

The assignment may be combined with similar studies on agroforestry in coffee, cocoa, or subsistence systems. The assignment may also be combined with a particular module development of the FarmTree Tool. 

Your Qualities

Professional, accurate, development-oriented. Initially the study may be somewhat theoretical, eventually possibly it can be combined with a field visit and local capacity building of the use of the FarmTree Tool by practitioners.
